Professor Charles Burnett, Warburg Institute:
"The programme for Cosmology and Divination presents an imaginative and fresh approach to subjects that are of the deepest concern to humanity. While establishing on a firm academic basis astrology, divination and the spiritual dimension of human experience in the past, it encourages participants to enhance their own experience through participation in ways of thought whose roots stretch deep into the past."
Dr Jeremy Naydler, fellow of the Temenos Academy:
"This unique MA course challenges current paradigms of thinking about, as well as habitual ways of perceiving, the world. It emboldens students to radically examine their own assumptions about the nature of reality, and encourages them to enquire more deeply into the role of the imagination in acquiring knowledge."
Carrie Paris, MA student 2007-8
"Through my personal participation as a full-time Tarot consultant, I have witnessed how levels of divinatory consciousness can motivate degrees of understanding in both client and diviner. Since graduating from the Cosmology and Divination program at the University of Kent, I now have a knowledge-base that allows me to categorically define these levels within a framework that fits my practice.
With that said, giving definition to divination was always a given in my line of work. However prior to graduating I was pretty humbled to the fact that I really hadn't considered defining divination in very clear terms and am somewhat ashamed to admit that I had taken it for granted. Simply put, it had always been there. While gathering valuable resources from the fountain of knowledge the capable staff at Kent provided, I realized this was an answer I could no longer use, nor did I want to.
Participating in the course removed me out of my stale position and gave me the sound tools and strong foundation to define my practice. In practical terms this has enhanced my practice ten-fold. However in personal terms, it has enriched my calling and sense of purpose.
My experience at Kent offered the rare opportunity to discover deeper levels of consciousness that occur when eliciting divinatory knowledge for the aim of self-awareness. This was made available through a very knowledgeable staff, each a skillful diviner in their own right. If you are a practicing diviner or curious about the ancient path that leads to esoteric knowledge, I highly recommend you take this journey. You won't be sorry."
Cori Soliz, MA student 2007-8
I have a tremendous amount of gratitude and appreciation for the founders of this program and for Kent University in general for allowing it to be taught on campus. For the first time ever in almost 8 years of my college education, I truly learned on a soul level.
I found people (the professors and students) who were like me, searching beyond the basic knowledge in academic textbooks, into the very heart of life itself. I was truly amazed that I found it in an academic environment, where course material is usually, although very interesting and thought-provoking, stale, limiting, and inapplicable to the soul of life.
I left class almost every day with my eyes wider, perceiving so much more of life around me and an unquenched thirst for more. The opportunities for exploring realms only hinted at in normal life and never addressed in mainstream university courses were innumerable. This course was integral to my development both as a student and as an individual and is worth so much more than any amount of credit I can attribute it here. I equate it with the search for the philosopher's stone and the gleaming shine of a golden opportunity I am so thankful I experienced.
Nadiya Shah, MA student 2008-9
"My time spent studying the MA in cultural cosmology and divination with Dr.Voss and many other brilliant minds was a definite highpoint in my academic life. Each seminar was engaging for its intellectual content but also, like any good education process, was also deeply personally relevant. I think the subject matter we covered was vast, and for those who are esoterically inclined but seeking to merge that part of them with a solid intellectual understanding, there is nothing like the journey of this MA.
Given the esoteric matter discussed, what amazed me most about what the readings, seminars, and countless formal and informal conversations I had with my tutors, professors, and fellow students was that understanding this subject intellectually and historically provided me with a deeper respect for my chosen field.
It has been said that anyone choosing to undertake religious studies does so not for the value it provides to potential employers, but for the personal knowledge and satisfaction it grants. Many of my fellow students took the course purely for personal knowledge and interaction with others with similar interests. In my case, I have been able to translate my education into greater opportunities for myself. Having an MA this distinct has already opened doors for me not only because of the credential it has granted, but also for the knowledge I have gained through the process of learning in such an enjoyable and supportive environment. I continue to share what I gained through the work I do, and this MA has allowed me to go forth, turning my curiosity and passion for spirituality into a flourishing career in this area.
I have always believed that education is not about the credential received at the conclusion, but about who I become in the process. My time spent earning MY MA in cultural cosmology and divination changed me deeply, made me more sure of what my spiritual practice is, granted me the confidence that comes from accomplishment and knowing what I truly desire to learn more about and contribute through my work, and gave me a deep respect for the history and integrity of divination as a religious and philosophical pursuit.
